Permanent Magnet Market Size in Kazakhstan

The Kazakh permanent magnet market dropped markedly to $X in 2021, waning by -38.7% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a resilient increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Exports from Kazakhstan

In 2021, shipments abroad of permanent magnets decreased by -4.8% to X kg, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a notable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 1,188%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, permanent magnet exports fell notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 672% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Russia (X kg) was the main destination for permanent magnet exports from Kazakhstan, with a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, permanent magnet exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kyrgyzstan (X kg), threefold. The United States (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Russia stood at +7.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kyrgyzstan (+33.6% per year) and the United States (+0.3% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for permanent magnets exports from Kazakhstan, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 6.8% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia amounted to +29.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kyrgyzstan (+20.3% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+21.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average permanent magnet export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -42.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw moderate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 298% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Dominican Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Latvia (+37.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kazakhstan

In 2021, approx. X tons of permanent magnets were imported into Kazakhstan; waning by -31.7% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 107% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, permanent magnet imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 143% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest permanent magnet supplier to Kazakhstan, with a 66% share of total imports. Moreover, permanent magnet imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), twofold.
