Rice Bran Market Size in Kazakhstan

For the third year in a row, the Kazakh rice bran market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 2% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, rice bran production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 26%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Rice bran exports from Kazakhstan shrank notably to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -51.6% compared with 2020. In general, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 472%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, rice bran exports dropped sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 570% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Kyrgyzstan (X tons) was the main destination for rice bran exports from Kazakhstan, with a 87% share of total exports. Moreover, rice bran exports to Kyrgyzstan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uzbekistan (X tons), eightfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kyrgyzstan amounted to +38.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (-6.3% per year) and Russia (-13.4% per year).

In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for rice bran exports from Kazakhstan, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 5.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Kyrgyzstan stood at +48.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (-5.2% per year) and Russia (-15.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average rice bran export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 46% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, rice bran export price increased by +76.2% against 2017 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kyrgyzstan (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Kazakhstan

In 2021, supplies from abroad of rice bran decreased by -8.8% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 166%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, rice bran imports declined rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 91%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then declined markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) was the main rice bran supplier to Kazakhstan, accounting for a approx. 99.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Russia amounted to +49.5%.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of rice bran to Kazakhstan.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Russia stood at +19.4%.

In 2021, the average rice bran import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -15.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 1.8% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Russia.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Russia amounted to -20.2% per year.
