Exports from Kazakhstan
In 2022, overseas shipments of zinc, unwrought (not alloyed) decreased by -9.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 142%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, zinc exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 96%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey (X tons) was the main destination for zinc exports from Kazakhstan, accounting for a 41% share of total exports. Moreover, zinc exports to Turkey exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Russia (X tons), with an 18% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Turkey stood at -9.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+26.3% per year) and Russia (+34.8% per year).
In value terms, Turkey ($X), Russia ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the largest markets for zinc exported from Kazakhstan worldwide, with a combined 76% share of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Russia, with a CAGR of +43.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average zinc export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 22% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, zinc export price increased by +58.0% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Russia ($X per ton) and Latvia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Zinc Imports
Imports into Kazakhstan
For the third year in a row, Kazakhstan recorded decline in purchases abroad of zinc, unwrought (not alloyed), which decreased by -75.7% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a sharp curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 730% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, zinc imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 804%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X tons) was the main supplier of zinc to Kazakhstan, with a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, zinc imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Russia stood at -22.7%.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of zinc, unwrought (not alloyed) to Kazakhstan, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Russia stood at -18.3%.
Import Prices by Country
The average zinc import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 34% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, zinc import price increased by +111.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 58%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Russia totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+44.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
