Whey Market Size in Kazakhstan

In 2022, the Kazakh whey market decreased by -2.8% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +62.4% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 129%. Whey production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Kazakhstan

In 2022, overseas shipments of whey decreased by -46% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 840% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, whey exports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 683% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Russia (X tons) was the main destination for whey exports from Kazakhstan, with a 99% share of total exports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan (X kg), with a 0.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Russia stood at +38.0%.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for whey exports from Kazakhstan, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 0.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Russia amounted to +28.6%.

Export Prices by Country

The average whey export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed a temperate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 146% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kyrgyzstan amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kyrgyzstan (+5.9%).

Whey Imports

Imports into Kazakhstan

In 2022, supplies from abroad of whey decreased by -20.8% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, whey imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X tons) constituted the largest whey supplier to Kazakhstan, with a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, whey imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belarus (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Poland (X tons), with a 2.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Russia stood at +33.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+20.2% per year) and Poland (+10.1% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of whey to Kazakhstan, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 27% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Russia stood at +27.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+12.0% per year) and Poland (+7.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average whey import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 14% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 28%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the price for Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+13.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
