In general, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 3,000% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined sharply in the following year.
In value terms, monoammonium phosphate exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 4,674% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted notably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Uganda (X tons) was the main destination for monoammonium phosphate exports from Kenya, accounting for a 86% share of total exports. Moreover, monoammonium phosphate exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Tanzania (X tons), sixfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Uganda amounted to +33.3%.
In value terms, Uganda ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for monoammonium phosphate (MAP) exports from Kenya, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 27% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Uganda amounted to +34.0%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average monoammonium phosphate export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -10.1% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (+3.9%).

Imports into Kenya
In 2022, overseas purchases of monoammonium phosphate (MAP) were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 230% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, monoammonium phosphate imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 233%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Saudi Arabia (X tons) constituted the largest monoammonium phosphate supplier to Kenya, with a 89% share of total imports. Moreover, monoammonium phosphate imports from Saudi Arabia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), ninefold. Russia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 0.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Saudi Arabia totaled +48.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+13.9% per year) and Russia (-31.8% per year).
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of monoammonium phosphate (MAP) to Kenya, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Israel, with a 0.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Saudi Arabia totaled +37.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+11.5% per year) and Israel (-28.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average monoammonium phosphate import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -16.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 46% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
