The Kenyan ammonium sulphate market contracted remarkably to $X in 2022, waning by -25.9% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, showed a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Ammonium sulphate exports from Kenya dropped sharply to X tons in 2022, which is down by -49.7% against 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 14,525%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ammonium sulphate exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 16,117%. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uganda (X tons) was the main destination for ammonium sulphate exports from Kenya, accounting for a 84% share of total exports. Moreover, ammonium sulphate exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X tons), ninefold. Burundi (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Uganda amounted to +32.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+39.2% per year) and Burundi (+41.1% per year).

In value terms, Uganda ($X) remains the key foreign market for ammonium sulphate exports from Kenya, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Rwanda ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Burundi, with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Uganda stood at +29.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+34.9% per year) and Burundi (+41.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average ammonium sulphate export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burundi ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burundi (+0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Kenya

Ammonium sulphate imports into Kenya shrank markedly to X tons in 2022, waning by -16.7% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 127%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ammonium sulphate imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a measured increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 152% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest ammonium sulphate supplier to Kenya, accounting for a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, ammonium sulphate imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Madagascar (X tons), with a 19% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +13.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+7.9% per year) and Madagascar (+5.6% per year).

In value terms, the largest ammonium sulphate suppliers to Kenya were China ($X), Russia ($X) and Madagascar ($X), with a combined 88% share of total imports. Thailand and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 8.6%.

India, with a CAGR of +64.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average ammonium sulphate import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -16.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 30%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+22.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
