In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in the Kenyan animal fats market, when its value decreased by -3% to $X. In general, consumption, however, saw a resilient expansion. Animal fats consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of animal fats and oils were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,299%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, animal fats exports dropped to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 1,166%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Uganda (X tons) was the main destination for animal fats exports from Kenya, with a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, animal fats exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ethiopia (X tons), threefold. Rwanda (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Uganda amounted to +76.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ethiopia (0.0% per year) and Rwanda (+84.5% per year).

In value terms, Uganda ($X) remains the key foreign market for animal fats and oils exports from Kenya, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ethiopia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Uganda totaled +86.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ethiopia (0.0% per year) and Rwanda (+72.8% per year).

The average animal fats export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -11.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ethiopia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+6.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

In 2021, overseas purchases of animal fats and oils increased by 51% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 461% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, animal fats imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 753% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and the UK (X kg) were the main suppliers of animal fats imports to Kenya.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +60.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of animal fats and oils to Kenya, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 23% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United Arab Emirates totaled +68.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+21.8% per year) and the UK (+124.8% per year).

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 90% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
