Apricot Market Size in Kenya

The Kenyan apricot market fell slightly to $X in 2022, which is down by -4.2% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 1,434%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apricot exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 1,911%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The Czech Republic (X kg), Rwanda (X kg) and the United Arab Emirates (X kg) were the main destinations of apricot exports from Kenya, together comprising 78% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Rwanda (with a CAGR of +21.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for apricot exported from Kenya were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Rwanda ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 88% share of total exports.

The average apricot export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -33.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 117% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+10.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Kenya

In 2022, the amount of apricots imported into Kenya skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 22% against 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 458% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, apricot imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 279%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Pakistan (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of apricot to Kenya, accounting for a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, apricot imports from Pakistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X kg), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Turkey (X kg), with a 3.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Pakistan stood at -12.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+14.5% per year) and Turkey (+63.8% per year).

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of apricots to Kenya, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 4.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Pakistan totaled -13.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-5.7% per year) and Turkey (+74.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average apricot import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -30.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
