Uganda (X tons) was the main destination for plaster article exports from Kenya, accounting for a 41% share of total exports. Moreover, plaster article exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Sudan (X tons), twofold. Somalia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Uganda stood at -6.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Sudan (+26.7% per year) and Somalia (+38.6% per year).

In value terms, Somalia ($X) remains the key foreign market for plaster article exports from Kenya, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uganda ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Somalia totaled +75.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (-8.4% per year) and Tanzania (-28.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average plaster article export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -6.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 73%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bahrain (+147.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

In 2021, supplies from abroad of articles of plaster or of compositions based on plaster decreased by -14.3% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 99% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plaster article imports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Tanzania (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the main suppliers of plaster article imports to Kenya, with a combined 82% share of total imports. These countries were followed by China, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Germany, which together accounted for a further 15%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +25.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X), Thailand ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the largest plaster article suppliers to Kenya, with a combined 76% share of total imports. China, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 68% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
