Circuit Breaker Market Size in Kenya

The Kenyan circuit breaker market expanded markedly to $X in 2022, with an increase of 9.3% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -8.4% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Circuit breaker exports from Kenya surged to X units in 2022, rising by 26% on the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 240% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, circuit breaker exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 108% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Tanzania (X units), Rwanda (X units) and Burundi (X units) were the main destinations of circuit breaker exports from Kenya, together accounting for 93% of total exports. Seychelles, Somalia and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6.1%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Somalia (with a CAGR of +38.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for circuit breaker exported from Kenya were Rwanda ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Burundi ($X), with a combined 84% share of total exports. Seychelles, Somalia and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

Somalia, with a CAGR of +29.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average circuit breaker export price amounted to $X per unit, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 190% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Somalia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (-2.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Kenya

Circuit breaker imports into Kenya soared to X units in 2022, growing by 22% against the year before. In general, imports posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 69%. Imports peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, circuit breaker imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -1.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 41%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of circuit breaker to Kenya, accounting for a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, circuit breaker imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X units), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Singapore (X units), with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +25.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-0.4% per year) and Singapore (+67.6% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), India ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the largest circuit breaker suppliers to Kenya, together comprising 70% of total imports. Singapore lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 3.4%.

In 2022, the average circuit breaker import price amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -16.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 40% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
