Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, banana exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 589%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The UK (X tons) was the main destination for banana exports from Kenya, with a 49% share of total exports. Moreover, banana exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Norway (X tons), fourfold. The United Arab Emirates (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the UK totaled +71.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Norway (+56.9% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+45.0% per year).
In value terms, the UK ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for bananas exports from Kenya, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Norway ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Sweden, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the UK amounted to +60.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Norway (+49.6% per year) and Sweden (+76.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average banana export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 79% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Africa (+17.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya
Banana imports into Kenya skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, growing by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 333%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, banana imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 183%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Uganda (X tons) was the main supplier of banana to Kenya, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Uganda amounted to +27.6%.
