Among the main countries of destination, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +143.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average banana and plantain export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -23.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 128%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+33.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya
Banana and plantain imports into Kenya dropped rapidly to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -24% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 315% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, banana and plantain imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 368%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Uganda (X tons) was the main banana and plantain supplier to Kenya, with a 97% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania (X tons), with a 2.6% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Uganda stood at +14.9%.
In value terms, Uganda ($X) constituted the largest supplier of bananas and plantains to Kenya, comprising 97% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 2.5% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Uganda stood at +13.7%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average banana and plantain import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -20.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the price for Tanzania stood at $X per ton.
