After three years of growth, the Kenyan basic dye market decreased by -15% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a resilient expansion. Basic dye consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, basic dye exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 398% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Tanzania (X tons) was the main destination for basic dye exports from Kenya, accounting for a 92% share of total exports. Moreover, basic dye exports to Tanzania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uganda (X kg), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Tanzania amounted to +42.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (-2.5% per year) and Malawi (+32.1% per year).

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for basic dyes and preparations based thereon exports from Kenya, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uganda ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Tanzania amounted to +21.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (+19.0% per year) and Malawi (+17.9% per year).

The average basic dye export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -42.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 68%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+22.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of basic dyes and preparations based thereon, when their volume decreased by -22.9% to X tons. In general, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 48%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, basic dye imports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest basic dye supplier to Kenya, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, basic dye imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from India stood at +5.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+35.0% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+19.1% per year).

In value terms, India ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the largest basic dye suppliers to Kenya, together comprising 90% of total imports. Belgium and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6.7%.

Among the main suppliers, Belgium, with a CAGR of +89.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average basic dye import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 26% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +6.1%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
