Black Printing Ink Market Size in Kenya

The Kenyan black printing ink market expanded modestly to $X in 2022, growing by 4.6% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption recorded a noticeable descent. Black printing ink consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of black printing ink increased by 7.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, black printing ink exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 137%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tanzania (X tons) was the main destination for black printing ink exports from Kenya, with a 40% share of total exports. Moreover, black printing ink exports to Tanzania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uganda (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Ghana (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Tanzania totaled -2.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (-9.2% per year) and Ghana (+39.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for black printing ink exported from Kenya were Tanzania ($X), Uganda ($X) and Ethiopia ($X), with a combined 62% share of total exports. Ghana, South Africa, Rwanda, Burundi, Nigeria, Malawi and Zambia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +111.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average black printing ink export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -7.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malawi (+47.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of black printing ink increased by 0.2% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, black printing ink imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

India (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the main suppliers of black printing ink imports to Kenya, with a combined 57% share of total imports. The Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, France, Sweden, Turkey, Italy, Switzerland and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +63.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Switzerland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of black printing ink to Kenya, comprising 29% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Switzerland totaled +17.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-11.0% per year) and the Netherlands (+3.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average black printing ink import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 9.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 71%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the price for Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Switzerland (+24.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
