Uganda (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) were the main destinations of borates exports from Kenya, with a combined 81% share of total exports. Nigeria and Ethiopia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +0.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Uganda ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Rwanda ($X) were the largest markets for borates exported from Kenya worldwide, together comprising 82% of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Tanzania, with a CAGR of -4.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

The average borates export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -13.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 34%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (+6.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Kenya
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of borates, when their volume decreased by -27.6% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 77%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.
In value terms, borates imports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded pronounced growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 59%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest borates supplier to Kenya, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, borates imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), tenfold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey amounted to +10.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+3.4% per year) and India (+3.8% per year).
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of borates to Kenya, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Turkey stood at +10.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+2.5% per year) and China (+4.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average borates import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 36% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
