Exports from Kenya
Bromides, iodides and oxids thereof exports from Kenya reduced to X tons in 2021, waning by -10.1% on the year before. Overall, exports recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 214%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, bromides, iodides and oxids thereof exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 174% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Uganda (X kg) was the main destination for bromides, iodides and oxids thereof exports from Kenya, accounting for a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, bromides, iodides and oxids thereof exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X kg), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Mozambique (X kg), with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Uganda totaled +11.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (-7.4% per year) and Mozambique (0.0% per year).
In value terms, Mozambique ($X), Uganda ($X) and Tanzania ($X) were the largest markets for bromides, iodides and oxids thereof exported from Kenya worldwide, with a combined 95% share of total exports.
Uganda, with a CAGR of +13.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average export price for bromides and bromide oxides, iodides and iodide oxides amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 52% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 203%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (+37.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya
In 2021, imports of bromides and bromide oxides, iodides and iodide oxides into Kenya skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 50% against 2020 figures. Overall, imports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 146% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, bromides, iodides and oxids thereof imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 104% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest bromides, iodides and oxids thereof supplier to Kenya, with a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, bromides, iodides and oxids thereof imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled +33.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+14.7% per year) and the UK (+15.9% per year).
In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of bromides and bromide oxides, iodides and iodide oxides to Kenya, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from India stood at +30.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+28.7% per year) and China (+1.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average import price for bromides and bromide oxides, iodides and iodide oxides amounted to $X per ton, declining by -12.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 105%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
