In 2021, calcium carbonate exports from Kenya was estimated at X tons, picking up by 14% on the previous year. Over the period under review, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +63.2% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 37%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, calcium carbonate exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Uganda (X tons) was the main destination for calcium carbonate exports from Kenya, with a 80% share of total exports. Moreover, calcium carbonate exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X tons), eightfold. Mozambique (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.6% share.

In value terms, Uganda ($X) remains the key foreign market for calcium carbonate exports from Kenya, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Rwanda ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Uganda amounted to +2.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (-12.8% per year) and Mozambique (+13.1% per year).

In 2021, the average calcium carbonate export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 13%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after six years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of calcium carbonate, when their volume decreased by -5% to X tons. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 92% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, calcium carbonate imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +65.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 79%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Egypt (X tons) constituted the largest calcium carbonate supplier to Kenya, accounting for a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, calcium carbonate imports from Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Turkey (X tons), with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Egypt stood at +19.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+60.8% per year) and Turkey (+59.0% per year).

In value terms, Egypt ($X), China ($X) and Vietnam ($X) appeared to be the largest calcium carbonate suppliers to Kenya, together accounting for 57% of total imports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +57.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average calcium carbonate import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 23% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 33%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+9.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
