Camel Meat Market Size in Kenya

In 2022, the Kenyan camel meat market increased by 9% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of camel meat in Kenya stood at X kg per head, standing approx. at 2021 figures. Overall, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the yield increased by 0.1% against the previous year. The camel meat yield peaked at X kg per head in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for camel meat production in Kenya; surging by 28% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals, however, recorded a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the number of producing animals increased by 37%. As a result, the amount of producing animals reached the peak level of X heads. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of this number remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, camel meat exports contracted notably to $X in 2015. In general, exports saw a dramatic slump. The exports peaked at $X in 2014, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Zambia (X kg) was the main destination for camel meat exports from Kenya, with a approx. 100% share of total exports.

From 2014 to 2015, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Zambia amounted to -88.2%.

In value terms, Zambia ($X) also remains the key foreign market for camel meat exports from Kenya.

From 2014 to 2015, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Zambia stood at -71.2%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2015, the average camel meat export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 145% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a significant increase. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Zambia.

From 2014 to 2015, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Zambia amounted to +144.6% per year.
