Canned Pineapple Market Size in Kenya

The Kenyan canned pineapple market declined to $X in 2022, reducing by -14.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded measured growth. Canned pineapple consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -14.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, canned pineapple exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 26%. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main destinations of canned pineapple exports from Kenya, with a combined 30% share of total exports. Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Belgium, France, Portugal, Poland, Norway and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Portugal (with a CAGR of +6.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Spain ($X), Germany ($X) and the UK ($X) were the largest markets for canned pineapple exported from Kenya worldwide, with a combined 29% share of total exports. In 2022, the average canned pineapple export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 14%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of canned pineapples decreased by -25.7% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 925%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, canned pineapple imports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 820% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the UK (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of canned pineapple to Kenya, accounting for a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, canned pineapple imports from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Tanzania (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Poland (X kg), with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the UK stood at +38.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+33.7% per year) and Poland (+4.1% per year).

In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of canned pineapples to Kenya, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 6.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 1.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the UK totaled +49.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+39.2% per year) and Singapore (+25.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average canned pineapple import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 122%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+15.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
