Carbonate Market Size in Kenya

The Kenyan carbonate market reduced to $X in 2021, falling by -5.4% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a drastic downturn. Carbonate consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Carbonate Production in Kenya

In value terms, carbonate production rose sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 40%. Carbonate production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Kenya

After three years of decline, shipments abroad of carbonates and peroxocarbonates increased by 32% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 203%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, carbonate exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 201%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

India (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) were the main destinations of carbonate exports from Kenya, with a combined 75% share of total exports. These countries were followed by South Africa, Uganda, the Philippines, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Oman, which together accounted for a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +39.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($X), Thailand ($X) and Tanzania ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for carbonate exported from Kenya worldwide, with a combined 72% share of total exports. South Africa, Ethiopia, the Philippines, Uganda, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Among the main countries of destination, South Africa, with a CAGR of +41.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average carbonate export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -8.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 12%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Africa (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Kenya

In 2021, approx. X tons of carbonates and peroxocarbonates were imported into Kenya; picking up by 1.8% against the previous year. Overall, imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, carbonate imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +40.1% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Egypt (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of carbonate imports to Kenya, with a combined 67% share of total imports. These countries were followed by India, Jordan, Vietnam, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +59.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest carbonate suppliers to Kenya were Turkey ($X), Egypt ($X) and China ($X), together comprising 53% of total imports. Vietnam, India, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Jordan and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

Russia, with a CAGR of +63.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average carbonate import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 6.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+17.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
