In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of cassava, when their volume increased by 160% to X kg. Overall, exports posted a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 957% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The UK (X kg), Switzerland (X kg) and the Netherlands (X kg) were the main destinations of cassava exports from Kenya, together comprising 83% of total exports.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Somalia (+10.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

In 2022, approx. X tons of cassava were imported into Kenya; picking up by 20% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 491% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cassava imports declined modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 588%. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Uganda (X tons) was the main cassava supplier to Kenya, with a 94% share of total imports. Moreover, cassava imports from Uganda exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Tanzania (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Uganda totaled +25.9%.

In value terms, Uganda ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cassava to Kenya, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 6.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Uganda totaled -8.7%.

Import Prices by Country

The average cassava import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -18.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a significant curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 64%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the price for Tanzania stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+4,868.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
