Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X kg in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, metal castor mounting exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a modest expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 355% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Uganda (X kg) was the main destination for metal castor mounting exports from Kenya, with a 92% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania (X kg), with a 1.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Uganda was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (0.0% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-34.4% per year).

In value terms, Uganda ($X) remains the key foreign market for castors with mountings of base metal exports from Kenya, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (+23.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of castors with mountings of base metal decreased by -5.4% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 119%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, metal castor mounting imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 204% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest metal castor mounting supplier to Kenya, accounting for a 90% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK (X tons), with a 2.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +9.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+24.8% per year) and the Netherlands (+35.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of castors with mountings of base metal to Kenya, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 6.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +6.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+32.9% per year) and the UK (+14.7% per year).

Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 46%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (-1.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
