Other Cereals Market Size in Kenya

The Kenyan other cereals market dropped slightly to $X in 2021, reducing by -4.3% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption, however, showed a significant increase. Other cereals consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

After three years of decline, overseas shipments of other cerealses increased by 644% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, other cereals exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a perceptible increase. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Burundi (X tons) was the main destination for other cereals exports from Kenya, accounting for a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, other cereals exports to Burundi exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Canada (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United States (X tons), with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Burundi amounted to +33.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (+37.0% per year) and the United States (+13.2% per year).

In value terms, Burundi ($X), Canada ($X) and the United States ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for other cereals exported from Kenya worldwide, together accounting for 94% of total exports.

Burundi, with a CAGR of +6.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average other cereals export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -33.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average export price increased by 63%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (+20.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Kenya

In 2021, purchases abroad of other cerealses was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. Over the period under review, imports posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 252%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, other cereals imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 876%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Uganda (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) were the main suppliers of other cereals imports to Kenya, together comprising 99% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +113.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Uganda ($X) constituted the largest supplier of other cereals to Kenya, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with an 18% share of total imports.

Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 177% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
