Chalk Market Size in Kenya

The Kenyan chalk market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after three years of decline. In general, consumption recorded a slight setback. Chalk consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chalk exports contracted notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 79% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Burundi (X tons) was the main destination for chalk exports from Kenya, accounting for a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, chalk exports to Burundi exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X tons), threefold. Uganda (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Burundi amounted to +2.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (-6.1% per year) and Uganda (+0.7% per year).

In value terms, Burundi ($X) remains the key foreign market for chalk exports from Kenya, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Rwanda ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Burundi was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (-21.4% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-6.0% per year).

The average chalk export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -19.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 20%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Sudan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Sudan (+14.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of chalk to Kenya, accounting for a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, chalk imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X tons), twofold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany stood at +21.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+459.6% per year) and the Netherlands (+28.7% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and China ($X) were the largest chalk suppliers to Kenya, together accounting for 86% of total imports. South Africa and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +231.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 23%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
