South Sudan (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) were the main destinations of cheese and curd exports from Kenya, together accounting for 66% of total exports.

Imports into Kenya
In 2022, supplies from abroad of cheese and curd increased by 1.7% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 163% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cheese and curd imports rose to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 113%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest cheese and curd supplier to Kenya, with a 29% share of total imports. Moreover, cheese and curd imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ireland (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by New Zealand (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy amounted to -9.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ireland (-11.1% per year) and New Zealand (+9.4% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X), Ireland ($X) and Egypt ($X) were the largest cheese and curd suppliers to Kenya, with a combined 56% share of total imports. Denmark, France, Austria, New Zealand, the UK, Germany and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
Denmark, with a CAGR of +8.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average cheese and curd import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
