Cheese Market Size in Kenya

The Kenyan cheese market reached $X in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cheese exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 189%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

South Sudan (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) were the main destinations of cheese exports from Kenya, with a combined 70% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for South Sudan (with a CAGR of +22.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Sudan ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Rwanda ($X) were the largest markets for cheese exported from Kenya worldwide, together accounting for 77% of total exports.

In 2021, approx. X tons of cheese were imported into Kenya; which is down by -32.8% on the year before. In general, imports recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 105%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cheese imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 113% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Italy (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and New Zealand (X tons) were the main suppliers of cheese imports to Kenya, with a combined 47% share of total imports. France, Ireland, Austria, Denmark, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the UK and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 49%.

The average cheese import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -20.2% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
