In value terms, chili and pepper exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 638%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

The UK (X tons) was the main destination for chili and pepper exports from Kenya, accounting for a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, chili and pepper exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Norway (X tons), with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the UK stood at +5.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+17.7% per year) and Norway (+10.2% per year).
In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for chilies and peppers (green) exports from Kenya, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Norway ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the UK amounted to +5.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Norway (+11.2% per year) and Germany (+15.7% per year).

In 2022, the average chili and pepper export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Somalia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Kenya
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of chilies and peppers (green), when their volume decreased by -36.8% to X kg. In general, imports saw a dramatic shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 733%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, chili and pepper imports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 724%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

India (X kg), Tanzania (X kg) and Uganda (X kg) were the main suppliers of chili and pepper imports to Kenya, with a combined 96% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +10.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
