Tanzania (X tons) was the main destination for chocolate and confectionery exports from Kenya, with a 29% share of total exports. Moreover, chocolate and confectionery exports to Tanzania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X tons), threefold. Burundi (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 1.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Tanzania totaled -7.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (-3.1% per year) and Burundi (-2.8% per year).

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the key foreign market for chocolate and confectionery exports from Kenya, comprising 28% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Rwanda ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 0.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Tanzania stood at -9.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (-2.6% per year) and the United States (-42.8% per year).

The average chocolate and confectionery export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -2.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 63%. Imports into Kenya

In 2022, chocolate and confectionery imports into Kenya reached X tons, rising by 3.8% on 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +40.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 57%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Egypt (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main suppliers of chocolate and confectionery imports to Kenya, with a combined 49% share of total imports. Turkey, India, Italy, China, the UK and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.
