Chocolate Market Size in Kenya

The Kenyan chocolate market fell to $X in 2022, reducing by -5% against the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +6.1% against 2020 indices. Chocolate consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chocolate production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +5.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Chocolate production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Kenya

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa increased by 166% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a dramatic slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 184%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chocolate exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a dramatic setback. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) were the main destinations of chocolate exports from Kenya, with a combined 79% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Rwanda, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Somalia, which together accounted for a further 13%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Somalia (with a CAGR of +15.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Uganda ($X) and Tanzania ($X) constituted the largest markets for chocolate exported from Kenya worldwide, together accounting for 60% of total exports. These countries were followed by Rwanda, Somalia, Zimbabwe and Malawi, which together accounted for a further 11%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Somalia, with a CAGR of +11.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In 2022, the average chocolate export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 18% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Somalia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (-1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Kenya

In 2022, overseas purchases of chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa increased by 6.6% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports showed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 245% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chocolate imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 253%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Egypt (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the main suppliers of chocolate imports to Kenya, with a combined 54% share of total imports. Germany, Belgium, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, India, Canada and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Jordan (with a CAGR of +85.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chocolate suppliers to Kenya were Turkey ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 37% of total imports. Egypt, Singapore, Malaysia, South Africa, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, India, Canada and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

Jordan, with a CAGR of +96.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average chocolate import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -19.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 28%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+14.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
