The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -10.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 43%. Cider, perry and mead production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages decreased by -9.3% to X litres, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 801%. The exports peaked at X litres in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead exports declined notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 721%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X litres) was the main destination for cider, perry and mead exports from Kenya, with a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, cider, perry and mead exports to Rwanda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Tanzania (X litres), twofold. Uganda (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 20% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Rwanda stood at +8.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+12.8% per year) and Uganda (+99.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for cider, perry and mead exported from Kenya were Tanzania ($X), Rwanda ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), together comprising 86% of total exports. Uganda and Somalia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

Somalia, with a CAGR of +72.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average cider, perry and mead export price amounted to $X per litre, which is down by -13.6% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, cider, perry and mead export price decreased by -18.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 49% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2020 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Somalia ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (+11.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

In 2021, purchases abroad of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages decreased by -5% to X litres, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 237%. Imports peaked at X litres in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 181%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X litres) constituted the largest supplier of cider, perry and mead to Kenya, with a 39% share of total imports. Moreover, cider, perry and mead imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X litres), threefold. Namibia (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands totaled +34.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-4.8% per year) and Namibia (+4.7% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), South Africa ($X) and Namibia ($X) were the largest cider, perry and mead suppliers to Kenya, with a combined 60% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +30.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average cider, perry and mead import price amounted to $X per litre, growing by 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per litre), while the price for Sweden ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
