Imports into Kenya

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of cigarettes containing tobacco, when their volume decreased by -2.7% to X tons. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 861% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 805%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Vietnam (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cigarettes containing tobacco to Kenya, accounting for a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, cigarettes containing tobacco imports from Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tons), fivefold. Turkey (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Vietnam stood at +8.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (+108.3% per year) and the UK (+49.1% per year).

The average cigarettes containing tobacco import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average import price increased by 33% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Suriname ($X per ton), while the price for Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
