Coffee Extract Market Size in Kenya

The Kenyan coffee extract market rose markedly to $X in 2021, picking up by 15% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine years. In value terms, coffee extract production expanded markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -11.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Kenya

In 2021, approx. X tons of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates were exported from Kenya; with a decrease of -62.5% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 161%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coffee extract exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 177% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Oman (X tons), Malta (X tons) and Ireland (X tons) were the main destinations of coffee extract exports from Kenya, with a combined 50% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Rwanda, Kuwait, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Australia, the UK, Uganda and Angola, which together accounted for a further 31%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Kuwait (with a CAGR of +76.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for coffee extract exported from Kenya were Malta ($X), Oman ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together accounting for 34% of total exports. These countries were followed by Kuwait, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Australia, the UK and Angola, which together accounted for a further 42%.

Kuwait, with a CAGR of +82.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average coffee extract export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 1.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 25%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Angola (+18.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

In 2021, supplies from abroad of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coffee extract imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 54%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) constituted the largest coffee extract supplier to Kenya, with a 34% share of total imports. Moreover, coffee extract imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Burundi (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Tanzania (X tons), with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Brazil stood at +27.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Burundi (+286.0% per year) and Tanzania (+14.2% per year).

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates to Kenya, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Brazil stood at +19.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+0.9% per year) and Malaysia (+44.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average coffee extract import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -6% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, coffee extract import price decreased by -16.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 45%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
