Couscous Market Size in Kenya

In 2021, the Kenyan couscous market decreased by -10.1% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. Imports into Kenya

In 2021, approx. X tons of couscous were imported into Kenya; reducing by -83.8% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 502%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, couscous imports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. Moreover, couscous imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), sevenfold. From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey totaled -3.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-7.3% per year) and the UK (+3.9% per year).

In value terms, Turkey ($X), Italy ($X) and the UK ($X) were the largest couscous suppliers to Kenya, together comprising 93% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates, India and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 6%.
