The Kenyan crude palm oil market rose modestly to $X in 2022, increasing by 2.2% against the previous year. In value terms, crude palm oil exports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 5,189% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Uganda (X tons) was the main destination for crude palm oil exports from Kenya, with a 94% share of total exports. Moreover, crude palm oil exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Uganda amounted to +43.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+65.2% per year) and Malawi (-34.5% per year).
In value terms, Uganda ($X) remains the key foreign market for crude palm oil exports from Kenya, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Rwanda ($X), with a 7.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Uganda amounted to +43.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+90.3% per year) and Malawi (-29.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average crude palm oil export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, export price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, crude palm oil export price increased by +47.6% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 37%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+15.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya
Crude palm oil imports into Kenya soared to X tons in 2022, jumping by 19% on 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 879% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, crude palm oil imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 791%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
Indonesia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main suppliers of crude palm oil imports to Kenya, with a combined 65% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +62.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest crude palm oil suppliers to Kenya were Malaysia ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Thailand ($X), with a combined 57% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +63.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average crude palm oil import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -22.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 64% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted notably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
