Tanzania (X tons) was the main destination for dairy spread exports from Kenya, accounting for a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, dairy spread exports to Tanzania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), threefold.

After ten years of growth, purchases abroad of dairy spreads decreased by -8.5% to X kg in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 272% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X kg in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, dairy spread imports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 335%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X kg) constituted the largest supplier of dairy spread to Kenya, accounting for a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, dairy spread imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X kg), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates stood at +77.7%.
