Crane Market Size in Kenya

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Kenyan crane market, when its value decreased by -11.4% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 2,412%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Uganda (X units), Somalia (X units) and Mozambique (X units) were the main destinations of crane exports from Kenya, together accounting for 79% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Somalia (with a CAGR of +36.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Somalia ($X) remains the key foreign market for derricks, cranes, mobile lifting frames, straddle carriers and work trucks fitted with a crane exports from Kenya, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uganda ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 20% share.

Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crane imports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest crane supplier to Kenya, with a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, crane imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (X units), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Poland (X units), with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +12.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+24.5% per year) and Poland (+62.6% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of derricks, cranes, mobile lifting frames, straddle carriers and work trucks fitted with a crane to Kenya, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +9.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+19.2% per year) and Poland (+50.1% per year).

In 2022, the average crane import price amounted to $X per unit, falling by -4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 7.3%. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per unit), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
