Uganda (X tons) was the main destination for modified starches exports from Kenya, with a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, modified starches exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Africa (X tons), fourfold. Rwanda (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Uganda stood at +42.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+32.3% per year) and Rwanda (+21.4% per year).
In value terms, Uganda ($X) remains the key foreign market for dextrins and other modified starches exports from Kenya, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 7.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Uganda amounted to +39.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+27.2% per year) and Denmark (0.0% per year).

Over the period under review, export price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Kenya
After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of dextrins and other modified starches decreased by -14% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 100%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, modified starches imports declined notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 86%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.
Imports by Country
Austria (X tons), the United States (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of modified starches imports to Kenya, with a combined 55% share of total imports. China, Thailand, South Africa, the Netherlands, Germany and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +64.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
