After three years of decline, the Kenyan disperse dye market increased by 8.4% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of disperse dyes and preparations based thereon was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 142% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, disperse dye exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a prominent increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X tons) was the main destination for disperse dye exports from Kenya, with a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, disperse dye exports to Rwanda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uganda (X tons), fourfold. Burundi (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Rwanda amounted to +27.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (+22.6% per year) and Burundi (+1.1% per year).

In value terms, Rwanda ($X) remains the key foreign market for disperse dyes and preparations based thereon exports from Kenya, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uganda ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Burundi, with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Rwanda amounted to +28.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (+29.4% per year) and Burundi (+0.5% per year).

In 2021, the average disperse dye export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 36% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Kenya

Disperse dye imports into Kenya soared to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 51% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 116% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, disperse dye imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted measured growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 157%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest disperse dye supplier to Kenya, accounting for a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, disperse dye imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), twofold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from India amounted to +16.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (-9.8% per year) and China (-15.8% per year).

In value terms, the largest disperse dye suppliers to Kenya were India ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and South Korea ($X), together accounting for 82% of total imports.

India, with a CAGR of +20.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
