In 2021, the Kenyan market for domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances decreased by -4% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Exports from Kenya
After two years of decline, shipments abroad of domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances increased by 53% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 166% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports of remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, exports of domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Rwanda (X tons) was the main destination for exports of domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances from Kenya, with a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances to Rwanda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Oman (X tons), with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Rwanda stood at +17.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+20.3% per year) and Oman (+212.3% per year).
In value terms, Rwanda ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances exports from Kenya, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Rwanda totaled +12.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Oman (+330.5% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+30.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average export price for domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, export price for domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances increased by +82.1% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 17%. The export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Oman (+37.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Domestic, Non-Electric, Cooking Or Heating Appliances
Imports into Kenya
In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances, when their volume decreased by -6.8% to X tons. In general, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 56%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, imports of domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliance to Kenya, with a 66% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by India (X tons), with a 5.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +9.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+32.3% per year) and India (+25.2% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances to Kenya, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 9.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +4.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+29.1% per year) and India (+26.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average import price for domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 7.2%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
