Powdered Milk Market Size in Kenya

In 2022, the Kenyan powdered milk market increased by 0.1% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. After two years of decline, overseas shipments of powdered milk increased by 18% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 148%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, powdered milk exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 142% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Oman (X tons) was the main destination for powdered milk exports from Kenya, with a 57% share of total exports. Moreover, powdered milk exports to Oman exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Malawi (X tons), fivefold. Uganda (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Oman amounted to +16.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malawi (-21.3% per year) and Uganda (-10.4% per year).

In value terms, Oman ($X) remains the key foreign market for powdered milk exports from Kenya, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malawi ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Uganda, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Oman stood at +2.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malawi (-30.3% per year) and Uganda (-12.7% per year).

The average powdered milk export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 3.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep contraction. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (-2.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, overseas purchases of powdered milk were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -17.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Overall, total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -8.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 74%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Uganda (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of powdered milk to Kenya, accounting for a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, powdered milk imports from Uganda exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (X tons), threefold. Oman (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Uganda amounted to +10.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+18.6% per year) and Oman (-6.3% per year).

In value terms, Uganda ($X) constituted the largest supplier of powdered milk to Kenya, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Uganda totaled +7.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Oman (-3.7% per year) and Malaysia (+9.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average powdered milk import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 27%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
