In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Kenyan ferro-silicon market, when its value decreased by -6.3% to $X. Overall, consumption showed a pronounced decrease. Ferro-silicon consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 179%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ferro-silicon exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 156%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X tons) was the main destination for ferro-silicon exports from Kenya, accounting for a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, ferro-silicon exports to Rwanda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uganda (X tons), twofold.

From 2013 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Rwanda stood at +47.3%.

In value terms, Rwanda ($X) remains the key foreign market for ferro-silicon exports from Kenya, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uganda ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Rwanda totaled +55.4%.

The average ferro-silicon export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 208% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda amounted to $X per ton.

From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+5.5%).

Imports into Kenya

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of ferro-silicon decreased by -8.9% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 65%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ferro-silicon imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 83%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of ferro-silicon to Kenya, with a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, ferro-silicon imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Zambia (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from India stood at -6.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Zambia (+10.3% per year) and China (+3.3% per year).

In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of ferro-silicon to Kenya, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 23% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from India amounted to -2.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Zambia (+13.6% per year) and China (+6.1% per year).

In 2022, the average ferro-silicon import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 3.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 63%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
