Filter Block Market Size in Kenya

In 2022, the Kenyan filter block market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a drastic downturn. Filter block consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Kenya

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in overseas shipments of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp, when their volume increased by 4% to X kg. Overall, exports, however, recorded a sharp slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 3,285% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, filter block exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 5,970% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X kg) was the main destination for filter block exports from Kenya, with a 62% share of total exports. Moreover, filter block exports to Rwanda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Somalia (X kg), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Sudan (X kg), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Rwanda amounted to -24.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Somalia (-2.8% per year) and South Sudan (+11.6% per year).

In value terms, Ethiopia ($X) remains the key foreign market for filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp exports from Kenya, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Rwanda ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Uganda, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Ethiopia totaled +13.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (-19.9% per year) and Uganda (-25.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average filter block export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 9.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 123% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Somalia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+27.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

In 2022, overseas purchases of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 530% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, filter block imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 495%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Germany (X kg) and Switzerland (X kg) were the main suppliers of filter block imports to Kenya, together accounting for 74% of total imports. Egypt, Denmark, the UK, China, South Africa and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Denmark (with a CAGR of +79.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the largest filter block suppliers to Kenya, together comprising 63% of total imports. The UK, Switzerland, Denmark, China, South Africa and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +98.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average filter block import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 82% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
