The Kenyan fructose market totaled $X in 2021, surging by 12% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a pronounced descent. Fructose consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of fructose and fructose syrup were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a sharp contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 822% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fructose exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 694% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uganda (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) were the main destinations of fructose exports from Kenya, with a combined 84% share of total exports. Rwanda, South Sudan and Burundi lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +5.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the key foreign market for fructose and fructose syrup exports from Kenya, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uganda ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with a 4.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Tanzania amounted to +7.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (-11.2% per year) and Rwanda (+2.3% per year).

In 2021, the average fructose export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 78%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (+15.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

In 2021, approx. X tons of fructose and fructose syrup were imported into Kenya; increasing by 12% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, imports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 671%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fructose imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 741% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Tanzania (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of fructose to Kenya, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, fructose imports from Tanzania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tons), eightfold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Tanzania totaled +39.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-6.2% per year) and China (-13.1% per year).

In value terms, the largest fructose suppliers to Kenya were the UK ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Swaziland ($X), with a combined 56% share of total imports. These countries were followed by China, France, Egypt, Brazil and India, which together accounted for a further 21%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Egypt, with a CAGR of +428.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average fructose import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 70% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted a buoyant expansion. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
