Plastic Furniture Market Size in Kenya

The Kenyan plastic furniture market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, picking up by 20% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a mild contraction. Plastic furniture consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 32%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X units of furniture of plastic were exported from Kenya; rising by 6.7% compared with 2020 figures. In general, exports showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 311%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic furniture exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 223%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), South Sudan (X units) and Rwanda (X units) were the main destinations of plastic furniture exports from Kenya, with a combined 93% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Zambia, Uganda and Tanzania, which together accounted for a further 5.6%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Zambia (with a CAGR of +69.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average plastic furniture export price amounted to $X per unit, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Kenya

In 2021, approx. X units of furniture of plastic were imported into Kenya; picking up by 5.9% on 2020 figures. In general, imports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 108% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic furniture imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 76%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of plastic furniture to Kenya, with a 66% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic furniture imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X units), fourfold. The UK (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +13.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+77.9% per year) and the UK (+17.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of plastic furniture to Kenya, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 5.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Uganda, with a 2.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +19.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+15.0% per year) and Uganda (+24.1% per year).

The average plastic furniture import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 29% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while the price for Egypt ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
