Grapefruit Market Size in Kenya

The Kenyan grapefruit market stood at $X in 2022, rising by 6.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a mild decline. Grapefruit consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Grapefruit Production in Kenya

In value terms, grapefruit production soared to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 112% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average grapefruit yield in Kenya declined dramatically to X tons per ha, waning by -15.7% on 2021. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 37%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha, and then contracted remarkably in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The grapefruit harvested area in Kenya skyrocketed to X ha in 2022, with an increase of 18% on 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 27%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the grapefruit harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Kenya

Grapefruit exports from Kenya plummeted to X tons in 2022, dropping by -42.8% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 1,017%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, grapefruit exports declined notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 1,005% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Qatar (X tons), Uganda (X kg) and Somalia (X kg) were the main destinations of grapefruit exports from Kenya, with a combined 78% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Rwanda, Kuwait and Seychelles, which together accounted for a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +49.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Qatar ($X) remains the key foreign market for grapefruits exports from Kenya, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Somalia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with an 8.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Qatar amounted to +37.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Somalia (+66.3% per year) and Rwanda (+50.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average grapefruit export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -4.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 103% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Qatar (+18.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Grapefruit Imports

Imports into Kenya

After seven years of growth, supplies from abroad of grapefruits decreased by -13.7% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 43%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, grapefruit imports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 88%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) constituted the largest grapefruit supplier to Kenya, with a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, grapefruit imports from South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X tons), threefold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from South Africa totaled +21.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+6.3% per year) and China (-3.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest grapefruit suppliers to Kenya were South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 87% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the United Arab Emirates and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 9.7%.

The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +33.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average grapefruit import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -2.8% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, grapefruit import price increased by +98.5% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 64%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+36.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
