In 2022, shipments abroad of heat exchange units was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 920% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, heat exchange unit exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 1,072%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (X units), Uganda (X units) and the United States (X units) were the main destinations of heat exchange unit exports from Kenya, together comprising 67% of total exports. South Africa, Belgium, Tanzania, Rwanda, the Netherlands and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +14.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Germany ($X) and Belgium ($X) constituted the largest markets for heat exchange unit exported from Kenya worldwide, with a combined 48% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Africa (+33.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kenya

In 2022, approx. X units of heat exchange units were imported into Kenya; increasing by 164% against 2021 figures. In general, imports continue to indicate noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 317% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, heat exchange unit imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 305% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

India (X units), Uganda (X units) and Bulgaria (X units) were the main suppliers of heat exchange unit imports to Kenya, together accounting for 51% of total imports. Italy, China, the United States, Germany, Sweden, Turkey, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Israel and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +75.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

China, with a CAGR of +62.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average heat exchange unit import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, which is down by -35.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 41% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per unit), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
