In 2022, overseas shipments of hydrogen increased by 2% to X cubic meters, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 204%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X cubic meters. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hydrogen exports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 92%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Uganda (X cubic meters) was the main destination for hydrogen exports from Kenya, with a 87% share of total exports. Moreover, hydrogen exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Tanzania (X cubic meters), sevenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Uganda stood at +4.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (-10.0% per year) and Rwanda (-16.8% per year).

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Uganda stood at +5.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (-16.3% per year) and Rwanda (-20.1% per year).

In 2022, the average hydrogen export price amounted to $X per cubic meter, waning by -3.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 85% against the previous year. Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+0.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Kenya

In 2022, imports of hydrogen into Kenya rose to X cubic meters, increasing by 2.9% on the year before. Overall, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 277%. Imports peaked at X cubic meters in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hydrogen imports fell markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 353%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X cubic meters) was the main hydrogen supplier to Kenya, accounting for a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, hydrogen imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X cubic meters), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates amounted to +17.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-5.6% per year) and India (-22.8% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hydrogen to Kenya, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 7.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United Arab Emirates totaled +17.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-13.9% per year) and India (-27.3% per year).

In 2022, the average hydrogen import price amounted to $X per cubic meter, reducing by -20.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per cubic meter), while the price for India ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+207.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
