The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for inedible fish products exports from Kenya, accounting for a 56% share of total exports. Moreover, inedible fish products exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mauritius (X tons), twofold. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to China totaled -20.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritius (0.0% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-33.8% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for inedible fish products exported from Kenya were Hong Kong SAR ($X), China ($X) and Uganda ($X), with a combined 91% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Mauritius, which accounted for a further 9%.
Mauritius, with a CAGR of 0.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In 2022, the average inedible fish products export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -49.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 62%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mauritius ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ethiopia (+268.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Kenya
For the seventh consecutive year, Kenya recorded decline in overseas purchases of inedible fish products, which decreased by -7.4% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a precipitous setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 2,756% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, inedible fish products imports rose to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 2,647% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Uganda (X tons) was the main supplier of inedible fish products to Kenya, accounting for a 96% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania (X kg), with a 3.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Uganda totaled +5.2%.
In value terms, Uganda ($X) constituted the largest supplier of inedible fish products to Kenya, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 2.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Uganda amounted to +8.5%.

The average inedible fish products import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price enjoyed a significant expansion. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
