In 2021, purchases abroad of iron and steel wire decreased by -18.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 36%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, iron and steel wire imports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a notable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest iron and steel wire supplier to Kenya, accounting for a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, iron and steel wire imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Uganda (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2013 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +1.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+28.9% per year) and Uganda (+17.8% per year).
