Lemon And Lime Market Size in Kenya
In 2022, after four years of growth, there was decline in the Kenyan lemon and lime market, when its value decreased by -1.8% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, recorded strong growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
Lemon And Lime Production in Kenya
In value terms, lemon and lime production skyrocketed to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 114%. Lemon and lime production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The average yield of lemons and limes in Kenya contracted to X tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -8.7% compared with 2021. Overall, the yield indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lemon and lime yield increased by +46.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the average lemon and lime yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The lemon and lime harvested area in Kenya dropped to X ha in 2022, falling by -7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 53%. The lemon and lime harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports from Kenya
In 2022, lemon and lime exports from Kenya reduced to X tons, which is down by -8.5% against the year before. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 601%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lemon and lime exports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 555% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Oman (X tons) were the main destinations of lemon and lime exports from Kenya, together accounting for 94% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Rwanda (with a CAGR of +88.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Rwanda ($X) and Tanzania ($X) were the largest markets for lemon and lime exported from Kenya worldwide, together comprising 82% of total exports.
Rwanda, with a CAGR of +75.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average lemon and lime export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 5.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 14%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (-6.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Lemon And Lime Imports
Imports into Kenya
After two years of growth, purchases abroad of lemons and limes decreased by -6% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 443%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lemon and lime imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 192% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Uganda (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of lemon and lime to Kenya, accounting for a 89% share of total imports. Moreover, lemon and lime imports from Uganda exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X tons), tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Uganda amounted to +23.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-0.2% per year) and Egypt (-9.1% per year).
In value terms, Uganda ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lemons and limes to Kenya, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 21% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Uganda stood at +41.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+6.3% per year) and Egypt (+3.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average lemon and lime import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed modest growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 129%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the price for Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+14.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
